Imagine being in a pitch-black room, fog coming from the stage, and the only light you can see is the stage lights. You can’t see their faces, only their movements being lit by the lights behind them. That was the setting of a Cigarettes After Sex concert, and it was magical.
The concert took place in The Theater at Ace Hotel. As I walked in, a huge chandelier hung from the ceiling. The theater was beautiful. Paintings of angels in different scenarios covered the walls, and the ceiling was painted in a way that made it look infinite.
The room went dark, when the show was about to begin, and the stage lights only showed the shadows of the band stepping up on stage. Their first song was “Flash,” from their self-titled album. They sound exactly the same live and on album. I could have closed my eyes and thought I was home listening to the album version.
Throughout the middle of the concert, the screen behind them turned on and showed videos of ocean waves, which set the mood for the more relaxed songs to come.
As I swayed back and forth, watching the calmness of this band perform, I can’t begin to describe how warm and special the whole atmosphere was. It was everything I expected and so much more! It was easy to see and feel how devoted the fans are to their fans and the love they have for them. As they closed their set with a beloved fan favorite “Apocalypse,” the crowd cheered for an encore. The band smiled sweetly and gave us one last song, “Dreaming of You.”
